Florence ASL 10

One of Italy’s largest ASLs has decided to reorganize based on Lean Thinking principles to reduce waste and add resources to activities that create value for patients.
A manager with years of experience in the automotive industry behind him took on the challenge of importing into the public service arena and a complex ASL principles that are now widespread in industry but still little known in health care.
Together with a staff of motivated professionals and through carefully planned reorganization actions, the time devoted to patients has been greatly increased, the way drugs and other consumables are managed has improved, and medical and surgical lines have been reorganized.
The results achieved involved improvements in both efficiency, staff satisfaction, and the quality of services provided to citizens.
The Lean model of ASL 10 has begun to spread to the Tuscany Region and other national ASLs, showing ample potential for future development.
